A woman has died after falling from a balcony while police were carrying out a welfare check at a property.
The woman, believed to be aged in her 50s, fell from the balcony on Gladstone Avenue, in Wollongong’s CBD, on Tuesday afternoon while officers attempted to speak to her.
She died at the scene.
A NSW Police spokesman said an independent investigation has now been launched into the incident.
‘About 11.05am today, police were called to a building on Gladstone Avenue, near Frederick Street, Wollongong, following reports of a concern for welfare,’ he said.
‘Officers attached to Wollongong Police District attended and attempted to speak with a woman who then fell from the balcony.
‘A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Team from Lake Illawarra Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.’
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
