Govt has abandoned most of its major promises, clinging to 2 or 3 achievements – Oppong Nkrumah

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The government has abandoned most of the major outcomes it promised to deliver and is now relying on a few achievements to demonstrate its performance, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has alleged.

The Ofoase/Ayirebi MP said the government’s performance must be measured against the specific commitments outlined in its 2025 and 2026 economic programmes rather than broad claims of development.

He argued that several key promises in health, education and sports had either not been delivered or had been significantly scaled back.

He cited the government’s pledge to expand health infrastructure, including the construction of 600 CHPS compounds and 35 Agenda 111 projects, as well as a commitment to construct new stadia.

“You were here when they said we were going to build 600 CHPS compounds in the first year, and now they said they were going to do about 35 Agenda 111s,” he said. On sports, he added: “They said we’re going to build about seven stadia in, I think, the first or second year.”

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, August 10, 2026, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the government had failed to sustain many of the major outcomes it initially outlined. “There are only about three games in town. Everything else that they listed, literally they have abandoned it,” he said.

He attributed the situation partly to weaknesses in fiscal policy and revenue mobilisation, arguing that government revenue had not increased sufficiently relative to the size of the economy to support its commitments.

“The major outcomes that they listed, they’ve literally abandoned all of them,” he said, adding that the government appeared to be “just clinging onto about two or three things as evidence that their government is performing.”

Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the government’s record should instead be assessed by comparing its promised programmes with budget allocations and actual implementation.

He argued that political claims of progress must be tested against measurable outcomes and whether the targets set out in the government’s economic programmes were being achieved.
