Ghanaian comedian and actor, Derick Kobina Bonney, aka DKB, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, after the latter made remarks about the government’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Afenyo-Markin, during a media engagement in Parliament, had pledged the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s support to the government if it demonstrates genuine commitment to combating galamsey.

But DKB questioned the pledge, asking why Afenyo-Markin didn’t support the then NPP-led administration before the 2024 general elections.

“Why didn’t you help your own party when it was in power?” DKB retorted.

Earlier in parliament, Afenyo-Markin stated that he and the minority caucus are ready to support the government, but he insisted the NDC must first show a willingness to act seriously.

He accused the government of benefiting from the very practices it claims to oppose, alleging that GoldBOD is buying gold from anywhere, and the galamseyers are selling to them.

“As the leader of the minority in parliament, I am ready to support them if they [the NDC government] are ready to confront the issue head-on. But because they are benefitting from GoldBOD buying gold from anywhere and the galamseyers are selling to them… If they are ready, I will bring my colleagues to support the government to fight galamsey,” he had earlier stated.
