Ghanaian striker Nathaniel Opoku played a decisive role as Newport County secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Harrogate Town in their League Two clash at Rodney Parade.

Opoku gave the hosts an early advantage, striking in the 8th minute after reacting quickly to meet Ben Lloyd’s low cross and finishing first time past goalkeeper Henry Gray. Harrogate responded before the interval, with Jack Evans equalizing in the 39th minute following a well-worked move initiated by Jacob Slater.

Newport regained the lead shortly after the restart when Joe Thomas converted from close range in the 58th minute, finishing off a precise delivery from James Crole. From then on, the home side, under the guidance of manager Christian Fuchs, controlled proceedings and limited Harrogate to few clear chances despite spells of possession.

The result marks another positive outing for Opoku, who has now registered six goals and two assists in 29 league appearances this season. Newport will next face Cheltenham Town away on April 18.
