Ruud van Nistelrooy is primed to leave Leicester City, with a deal to appoint Russell Martin set to be concluded in the coming days.
Mail Sport understands conversations with Martin have continued into this week and will be finalised imminently.
It will be the 39-year-old’s first job since he was sacked by Southampton in December.
Having steered Saints to the top flight via the play-offs in 2024, he carries the appeal of knowing how to navigate the Championship, though the task will be heightened next season by the possibility of a points deduction after Leicester were charged by the Premier League with breaching financial rules.
Van Nistelrooy’s position has been left in limbo since the club’s relegation was confirmed. He has been ensconced in planning for the Championship campaign for much of the past two months, but has been frustrated by the silence from the club’s hierarchy.
The managerial scenario has run into the parallel issue caused by the club’s finances. On Tuesday it was announced that Leicester have been referred to an independent commission for an alleged PSR violation when they were last in the Championship in 2023-24.
