Whatever the Italian word is for ‘steamie’, the steady migration of Scottish players to Serie A has been the talk of it.

The exploits of Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour at Napoli have been comprehensively documented. Che Adams is thriving at Torino where he now shares a dressing room with Nathan Patterson. You can count Kieran Bowie, Josh Doig, Lennon Miller and Liam Henderson among the diaspora, too.

However, another Scot’s switch to Italy has largely flown under the radar. Back in July, Jack Harper, the former Real Madrid wonderkid and presumed saviour of Scottish football, signed a one-year deal with ASD Nuova Igea Virtus.

Currently playing in Serie D, the fourth tier of the Italian national league pyramid, the Sicilian part-timers were founded in 1946 and subsequently re-founded in 1964, 2011 and again in 2019. Which is to say they’ve had a complicated existence.

Harper can surely relate. Now 30, the Malaga-born frontman was 13 when he first made headlines, signing with Real Madrid after impressing in a youth football tournament. He spent almost six years with Los Blancos, learning his trade in its exalted ‘La Fabrica’ academy under the watchful eye of top coaches, Fernando Morientes and Zinedine Zidane amongst them.

If he wasn’t bumping into Cristiano Ronaldo in the swimming pool, he was having a blether with Gareth Bale or studying Luka Modric. All the while, he was quietly developing, establishing himself as one of the top scorers in multiple age groups within the academy.

Soon after his 18th birthday, and with Real’s youth structure under review, he decided to swap Madrid for Brighton, signing a two-year deal with the then English Championship side. He couldn’t have known it at the time, but Harper’s move to the Amex Stadium was the start of a frustratingly nomadic decade.

A catalogue of injuries and bad luck kick-started a footballing odyssey that has taken in spells at Malaga, Getafe, Alcorcón, Cartagena and Villarreal, as well as Racing Santander, Hércules, Marbella, Linense and, more recently, Spanish fourth-division outfit Linares.

Harper joined the latter ahead of the 2025-26 season and made an encouraging start, scoring four goals in his first nine appearances before, once again, injury struck. He spent almost four months on the sidelines and, when the campaign ended, he found himself a free agent once more.

‘At that point, I decided to forget all about it until after the World Cup,’ he tells Daily Mail Sport. ‘I said to my family I didn’t want to think about it. I needed to just disconnect.’

He and his brother Ryan travelled to Miami to take in Scotland’s final group match against Brazil and, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Tartan Army in the stands of the Hard Rock Stadium, he allowed himself to wonder what might have been.

‘It was definitely in the back of my mind that I could have been on the pitch because that’s the type of person I am,’ says Harper. ‘I know that if the road was a bit straighter and I’d had just a little more luck, then absolutely, I could have been there representing my country.

‘Years ago, I was knocking on the door when I was playing in Spain. I was called up to the 30-man squad several times but then the injuries started to hit and the door kind of closed. So yeah, of course I was at the stadium thinking I should have been playing. I know the level of football I’m capable of. I just never got a chance to show it.

‘But being there was a cool experience. The atmosphere was unbelievable and to see us taking on a Brazil side dressed in the yellow jerseys with those five stars on them, it was incredible. The World Cup’s the pinnacle of football. I was just glad to be part of it somehow.’

After that party in the US, Harper returned to Spain to discover he was a man in demand.

‘I had a few interesting offers on the table,’ he smiles. ‘I spoke with my partner and we agreed that, whilst our preference was to stay in Spain, it might be wise for us to consider all options. Last season was really hard and so we thought that maybe a change of scenery would do us all good.

‘Next thing I knew, I had an offer from a team in Iraq. There was an opportunity with a team in Thailand, too. That was very, very close to being done. But then an agent contacted me out of the blue with some deals from Italy. Soon enough, we were packing our bags and moving to Sicily.’

Despite the relative proximity of the two countries, Harper insists Spanish and Italian football could not be more different.

‘It’s been a bit of a culture shock,’ he admits. ‘Football in Italy is much more physical. I don’t think I touched a ball for the first ten days of pre-season. It was all about getting fit and not worrying about the technical side of things.

‘It’s different, but that’s why I’m here. I needed to get out of my comfort zone. I feel like I’ve got it all to prove. Nobody really knows me here, I don’t know the language… it’s not easy.

‘But maybe that’s what I need. You know, thirty’s still young. I could have another decade-plus of playing in front of me. So, the plan is to get fit, stay fit and hopefully start climbing the leagues again. The hunger is still there.’

He adds: ‘I’ve kind of been on an opposite journey to a lot of people. I started at a huge club, maybe the biggest club in the world; I’ve had a good contract with a La Liga team; I’ve played in front of my hometown fans and heard them chanting my name. So, I know what it’s like to be there. It doesn’t scare me in the slightest. I’ve had a taste of it and I’m hungry for more.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo has shown how long it’s possible to stay at the top level. So, too, Karim Benzema. Even Harry Kane. What is he now, 33? And he’s just had the best year of his career, winning the Ballon d’Or. It’s not that long ago people were writing forwards off at that age. So, no, I’m still motivated and I don’t see any reason why, with a wee bit of luck, I can’t keep playing until I’m close to my forties.’

If Harper’s self-belief and resilience sound impressive, it’s because he’s had ample opportunity to work on them. In addition to his various injury issues, he’s had to contend with the weight of expectation that comes with being on the books of Real Madrid, intense scrutiny from a very young age, and, of course, plenty of rejection.

Perhaps the most memorable example of the latter came in 2015 when he was left out of the Scotland Under-19 squad by then-coach Ricky Sbragia. The former Sunderland boss triggered a backlash from former players, fans and pundits alike when he dismissed Harper as ‘a luxury player’ that his team couldn’t accommodate.

Spanish football journalist Graham Hunter described it as a ‘retrograde, almost prehistoric decision’. Harper’s dad, John, branded the description ‘harsh’, warning that Scotland could lose his son to the Spanish national team.

Sbragia subsequently apologised for his choice of words but Harper admits it took him some time to get over.

‘It was hard to deal with,’ he nods, ‘especially considering the love I have for Scotland. I might have been born in Spain, but I’ve got Scottish blood pumping through me. Honestly, the prospect of playing for Scotland was always more exciting to me than playing for Real Madrid. But that was just the mentality some people had at that time.

‘I was probably the most high-profile victim of that way of thinking but there would have been others as well, players who maybe weren’t as physical and so were written off. But I would definitely say times have changed. You can see that with more technical players like Billy Gilmour coming through and being successful.

‘The game has moved on from that kind of thinking and it’s a good thing, I think, for Scotland that it has.’

Whilst his international experience amounts to a handful of age-grade caps, Harper has not yet given up on playing again for his country.

‘The beautiful thing about football is that things can change quickly, especially if you’re a striker. You only need a season or a season and a half of scoring goals, and your career can lift off again. There are so many examples of that, maybe now more than ever.

‘So, that’s the thing that keeps me motivated every day when I go to training. If I can get into a good rhythm, score goals and stay fit, then who knows what might happen? I still have that dream and that hunger to play for Scotland. That might seem a bit crazy to some people. Honestly, sometimes it even seems a bit crazy to me. But it’s the thing that drives me and it’ll continue to drive me either until it happens or I retire.’

Harper admits he would love to experience playing in Scotland before he hangs up his boots, having come close to doing so on multiple occasions in the past.

‘I’ve had phone calls where it’s been like, “Okay, it’s going to get done” and then, for one reason or another, it hasn’t happened,’ he says. ‘I came pretty close to joining St Johnstone one time, and Falkirk as well many years ago. The last couple of years, there’s been interest from some Championship sides. It’s a challenge I’m definitely up for and something I’d like to make happen.’
