Contemporary highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has expressed dissatisfaction with what he deems unfair treatment by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the years.
According to him, the party has shown him little regard, particularly after he composed and produced a song for them.
He also pointed out that the NPP uses the song without his consent for various purposes, creating an impression to the public that he is still aligned with the party.
Kwabena Kwabena accused the NPP of selectively editing parts of the song to suit their political agenda without reaching out to him for approval.
“I don’t like to talk about certain things. The NPP has taken me for a ride for a very long time. They did that again; without my consent, they took the music, they didn’t even contact me, and they went to the studio themselves and cut it to suit their purpose without my consent,” he stated in an interview with OKAY FM.
He added, “When they were done, they didn’t tell me anything, and so people still think I’m NPP because of what they do.”
Kwabena Kwabena, a well-known avid supporter, and campaigner for the NPP, criticised the party for what he viewed as poor governance during their tenure.
He also shared his negative experiences working with political parties, particularly about composing campaign songs.
In a 2024 interview, his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, disclosed that some individuals accepted money on behalf of Kwabena Kwabena after he wrote a campaign song for the NPP in 2016, without his knowledge or consent.
Ashis said while Kwabena Kwabena believed he had created the song voluntarily and without charge, NPP party officials mistakenly assumed payments had been made.
According to Ashis, some of Kwabena Kwabena’s friends, who were also party members, accepted the money on his behalf, claiming it was for the artiste.
