Tiwa Savage is a Nigerian musician

For Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage, 2021 was the year her world stood still.

According to her, that year was so devastating because she lost her father and faced the public storm of a leaked sex tape.

Tiwa Savage shared this during a talk show hosted by British-Nigerian media personality Zeze Mills, where she recounted some of the most difficult challenges she had faced.

When asked about the darkest moment in her career, Tiwa did not hesitate to mention the painful year that changed her life.

“When my dad died and my sex tape was released… that was the lowest. The only way I could have survived was not to think about it. It was really, really low,” she said.

The singer explained that being invited to the interview meant a lot to her, especially after going through years of personal struggles.

“Being here on the couch with you is such a blessing. Just the fact that you even want to talk to me, people want to hear what I have to say after how many years, it just feels good. I’ve gone through so much, but have I really enjoyed the moment?” she asked.

Tiwa Savage has since found ways to address the 2021 scandal, not just in interviews but also through her music.

In her song “Loaded,” which features Asake, she used just two lines to send a message to her critics and anyone who tried to define her by that moment in her past.

She sang a Yoruba phrase in the song, “Sex tape o’le baye mi je, igbadun kekere yen, Na who never f*ck, hands in the air,” which translates to “sex tape can’t spoil my life.”

Through these lyrics, the Nigerian singer noted that she refuses to let the 2021 incident derail her career.
