Former Black Stars striker, Kwesi Appiah, has recounted his historic journey with the Black Stars.

Before the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Appiah’s fine form at Cambridge United and Reading caught the eye of Avram Grant, Ghana’s coach, earning him his first call-up to the national team.

Talking to Flashscore, the Boreham Wood striker recounted the moment he arrived at camp and the anxiety he endured.

“Arriving at camp with the national team and rubbing shoulders with the big stars, not just of Ghanaian football but African football as a whole, was jaw-dropping at times and a lot of pinch-myself moments.”

“I remember being excited but also very nervous to meet the rest of the players. Once we went down to train and I met many of the players, I immediately felt settled, and that’s credit to all the players who were there as they made me feel very welcome and part of the family,” he said.

Although Appiah had to wait for his debut, as he was an unused substitute in Ghana’s first two games of the tournament, he finally got his moment when he was substituted for Jordan Ayew in Ghana’s last group game against South Africa.

He shared the excitement of donning the Black Stars jersey for the first time.

“The call-up itself was great, but putting on that shirt for the first time and gracing the pitch with my teammates was euphoric and a dream come true,” he added.

Appiah played four times in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, winning the silver medal after Ghana lost to Ivory Coast 8-9 on penalties. Overall, he earned seven caps for Ghana and scored one goal.
