The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has strongly condemned violent incidents involving students during the 2026 Ashanti Regional Super Zonal Schools Athletics Competition held last week at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
In a statement, the GOC described the behaviour of some students as “unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of sport,” emphasizing the importance of discipline, respect, and fair play in school athletics. The incidents reportedly involved scuffles among students inside and outside the stadium, disrupting an otherwise well-organized three-day championship.
The competition, held under the Ghana Education Service (GES), featured strong performances from top schools including St. Louis SHS, T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS, Opoku Ware School, and Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS, particularly in sprints, hurdles, and field events.
GOC officials called on all schools, students, and sports organizers to uphold safety and sportsmanship standards in future competitions. They reiterated their commitment to working with regional education and sports authorities to educate young athletes on discipline and responsible behaviour, ensuring that Ghana’s school sporting events remain a platform for talent development rather than conflict.
