A man is dead and another is on the run after an alleged altercation at a remote campground in the NSW Northern Tablelands.

Police said that two men became involved in an argument at a campsite off Point Lookout Road in Ebor, about 80km east of Armidale, at about 1.40am on Monday. 

During the altercation, one of the men allegedly seriously assaulted the other, a 33-year-old. 

The injured man was driven to Thora, about 25km north-west of Bellingen, where paramedics attempted to revive him. He could not be saved. 

Police attended the campground but were unable to locate the other man, who remains on the run.

A crime scene has been established, as local detectives and officers from State Crime Command Homicide Squad launched an investigation.
