UFC’s major event celebrating Mexican Independence Day took place at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, for the first time this Saturday, September 12, featuring fighters from Mexico, Brazil, and across Latin America in 13 bouts.
In the 145-pound main event, Brazil’s Jean Silva defeated American José Miguel Delgado in the third round; however, Silva had been knocked down and dominated during the opening round.
Silva found his rhythm as he began to overwhelm Delgado with heavy pressure, powerful strikes, and submission attempts. Delgado had stepped in as a replacement for Mexico’s Yair Rodríguez, who was unable to compete due to injury.
Silva secured a spectacular victory by applying a one-armed rear-naked choke on Delgado.
With this win, Silva earned one of the $100,000 performance bonuses.
Former Mexican flyweight champion Brandon Moreno defeated American Joseph Morales via split decision, snapping a two-fight losing streak as he seeks to re-enter the title contention picture. The judges’ split decision saw scores of 30-27 and 30-27 for Moreno, and 29-28 for Morales.
