Former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars defender Gariba Ibrahim has weighed in on Ghana’s footballing history, naming Mohammed Polo as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, closely followed by Abedi Pele.

Speaking to Kessben TV, the legendary defender emphasised that Polo stood out in Ghana’s rich footballing past due to his exceptional creativity, skill, and unique playing style, which set him apart from his peers.

“For me, Mohammed Polo is Ghana’s greatest footballer of all time. And after him, I would place Abedi Pele. Polo didn’t just play football; he painted pictures on the pitch. His ball control, his dribbling, his vision, it was something else. You had to see him live to understand,” he said.

Renowned for his effortless flair and skill on the pitch, Polo became a household name in the 1970s thanks to his standout performances for Accra Hearts of Oak and the Ghana national team.

His artistry and vision were instrumental in Ghana’s successful 1978 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Abedi, known for his creativity, dribbling, and leadership, achieved stardom in Europe with Olympique Marseille, where he helped the club win the 1993 UEFA Champions League. On the international stage, he earned over 70 caps for Ghana and was named the best player at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations.

A three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele’s legacy remains strong both in Ghana and across African football.
