Obaapa Christy has revealed that some up-and-coming gospel musicians in Ghana regularly perform her songs at church programmes and other events without seeking her approval beforehand.

The gospel artiste said she does not take offence at the practice, explaining that young musicians today are following a path similar to what established gospel ministers experienced when they were beginning their own journeys.

Speaking in a recent interview on Hitz FM, Obaapa Christy said the main difference between her generation and today’s crop of musicians is the number of opportunities available for young talents to gain exposure.

She noted that while emerging artistes now have access to social media and multiple digital platforms, musicians in her era had to rely mainly on radio and television, which offered limited opportunities.

“Many young musicians use my songs without permission. Back then, when we sang other people’s songs in church, we only had radio and television, and even those platforms were limited.

“Things have changed today, but does that mean you have to have people arrested just because they sang your song? We also sang other people’s songs before we got to where we are today,” she stated.

According to the singer, she would rather encourage young musicians than take action against them for performing her songs, especially considering the role similar opportunities played in helping established artistes grow.

“If social media had existed during our time, I’m sure many musicians from our generation would also have used other people’s songs to grow their platforms,” she said.

Obaapa Christy added that some musicians have used her songs to build their online presence, particularly on platforms such as YouTube, helping them attract audiences and create income streams.

“Some of them are even earning a living from the numbers they’ve built using my songs, and I don’t see that as a bad thing. God has a way of blessing all of us,” she clarified.

The gospel musician is set to host the 2026 edition of Royal Praise on August 9, 2026, at UPSA in Accra.

The event will feature performances from several gospel artistes, including Empress Gifty, Joyce Blessing, Uncle Ato, Celestine Donkor, Akesse Brempong and Kwaku Gyasi.
