Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has explained that the decision to start Benjamin Asare in Ghana’s win over Chad on Friday, March 21, 2025, was based on an assessment in training.
Otto Addo stated that the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper demonstrated great quality in training, earning the starting spot over the two other goalkeepers.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the coach indicated that although all three goalkeepers performed well in training, Asare was “a bit better.”
“He did well in training. It was a close race, but Benjamin did a bit better,” the former Borussia Dortmund trainer noted.
Benjamin Asare is one of three debutants in the squad and among three locally-based players.
The goalkeeper marked his Black Stars debut with a clean sheet in a comprehensive 5-0 victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has now recorded 12 clean sheets in all competitions, conceding just one goal in his last eight matches.
