President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has raised concerns about the government’s decision to publish the Black Stars budget public.

During the 2024 election campaign, President John Dramani Mahama pledged to make the GFA’s budget for the Black Stars public, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability.

The promise was kept after he took office, as Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams published the Black Stars’ budget, which was later reduced to redirect funds toward other sporting disciplines.

Here are the reasons for Black Stars’ budget disclosure

Speaking on the issue in an interview with Asaase Radio on February 17, 2026, Okraku questioned why other institutions in the economy were not compelled to disclose their budgets while the GFA was singled out.

He argued that since the GFA is a private institution, it is difficult to understand why such a directive should be imposed, describing it as worrying.

“I don’t have a problem at all, but I ask myself one question. Why are we not asking every sector of the economy, every unit of the economy, to make their budgets public? Why only the Black Stars? Why do we create confusion when there’s no need for confusion? Why are we not asking Asaase Radio to make their budget public?

“The GFA is a private entity. Why are we not asking every sector of Ghanaian public life to make their budgets public? Sometimes we waste our time on things which are needless, when the real issues exist,” he said.

However, the GFA boss noted that he has accepted the decision and will continue to cooperate, as he has no control over the disbursement of funds.

“I don’t have any problem. The president of the country has already given a directive, and the minister of the sector has carried it out. Every line must go public because the point is, I only advise. I don’t approve the budget, and I don’t disburse the budget,” he added.
