Unbeaten WBA#2 Daiya Kira (4-0, 3 KOs; amateur 46-6, 16 KO/RSC), 107.75, impressively knocked out #7 Mexican Ivan Garcia Balderas (13-5-1, 5 KOs), 106.75, with a single right cross over a left jab at 0:27 of the second round in a ten-round WBA eliminator for #1 on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. Formerly two-time national amateur titlist Kira, 22, took the initiative from the outset, and exploded his vaunted shot to bring home the bacon so early. Kira, in his forthcoming fifth pro bout, may have an ambitious shot against WBA/WBO titleholder Rene Santiago of Puerto Rico who lately edged Kyosuke Takami here this December. Ironically it is Kira that lost to Takami on three occasions when they were amateurs, and Kira wishes to avenge his ex-grudge rival’s forfeiture of the belt.
WBA supervisor: Jose Oliver Gomez (Panama).
Promoter: Shisei Promotions.
