Ghanaian movie director, Jones Agyeman, has taken a swipe at actor and musician Lilwin over recent comments the latter made regarding Kumawood directors and the process of getting movies onto international streaming platforms like Amazon Prime.

Speaking in an interview with Papa Jay of Poleeno Multimedia, Jones Agyeman dismissed Lilwin’s claims that his movie made it onto Amazon Prime solely because of exceptional directing and production quality.

According to the award-winning director, such statements only expose Lilwin’s ignorance about how such platforms operate.

“It is likely because he cannot read,” Jones Agyeman bluntly stated.

He went on to explain that had Lilwin been more informed, he would understand that Amazon Prime is essentially a marketplace for movies, where with the right distribution connections, anyone can have their film listed for sale and not necessarily because of the production’s supposed exceptional quality by the like Frank Fiifi Garbin or Jackson K. Bentum.

Director Jones Agyeman further clarified that most professional directors don’t even prioritize Amazon Prime and similar platforms because of the restrictions they impose.

He pointed out that once a movie is placed on such platforms, producers lose certain rights, such as uploading the same content on YouTube, a platform where they might recover their investment more quickly than through Amazon.

He emphasized that these streaming platforms come with strict contractual obligations that do not always serve the best financial interests of local producers.

To buttress his point, Jones Agyeman revealed that his own movie “Two Pilots,” which starred Lilwin himself, had an opportunity to be listed on Amazon Prime, but he declined the offer because he understood the limitations involved and opted for other avenues that he considered more beneficial.
