An Aussie baseball club has rallied around one of its much-loved stars following a freak accident that resulted in the loss of one of his eyes.
Tyler Forney was struck in the eye by a foul ball off his bat while playing for the Adelaide Angels in a South Australian Baseball League match against Woodville last weekend.
Despite undergoing surgery, doctors were unable to save the sight in his injured eye.
Originally from Arizona in the US, Forney relocated to Australia a decade ago and was in his 11th season with the Angels.
He played his 300th game for the club earlier this year.
The Adelaide baseball community is now rallying behind Forney and his young family so he can focus on the long road to recovery ahead and transition to life beyond the sport.
‘While Ty’s playing career has come to an unexpected end, the impact he has made on the Adelaide Baseball Club and wider baseball community will endure for many years to come,’ a fundraiser states.
The club described Forney as a model teammate, competitor and ambassador for the game.

‘Time and time again, Ty made the extraordinary look routine, showcasing an athleticism and natural ability that were truly special to watch,’ the fundraiser added.
‘Ty is admired not only for his talent on the field, but for his character away from it.
‘Humble, quiet and hardworking, he is as adored by the youngest members of our club as he is by adults.’
The fundraiser has raised almost $16,000 within several days.
Many rival clubs pledged their support and best wishes for Forney.
