A trailer carrying bottled water caught fire on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Suhum Mile 44 on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) quickly responded to the incident and managed to contain the flames, salvaging about 70% of the cargo. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident caused significant traffic congestion.

The fire broke out on a MAN TGX26 trailer, and the cause is still under investigation. The GNFS commended the responding team from the Bunso Fire Station for their professionalism and timely action, which prevented the situation from escalating into a more severe incident.

The incident highlights the importance of fire safety protocols, especially when transporting commercial goods over long distances. Authorities have urged transport operators and drivers to adhere strictly to these protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The GNFS’s prompt response saved a significant portion of the cargo, minimizing the damage. About 30% of the bottled water was lost in the fire, but the swift action of the firefighters prevented further destruction.

This incident is a reminder of the potential dangers on the roads, particularly for vehicles carrying large quantities of goods. The Accra-Kumasi Highway is a major transportation route, and incidents like this can have significant impacts on traffic and commerce.

The GNFS’s investigation into the cause of the fire will help identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. In the meantime, drivers and transport operators are advised to prioritize fire safety and take necessary precautions to ensure safe transportation of goods. Source: Adomonline
