Emergency services are responding to a major incident following reports of a powerful explosion at a residential building on Clarence Street in Lidcombe early this morning.

Shortly after 6.30am, a loud blast rocked the area, sending debris flying and prompting a full-scale emergency response.

Firefighters, paramedics, and police rushed to the scene, where part of the building was found to have partially collapsed. 

Multiple people are believed to be trapped inside.

NSW Ambulance confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that two people have been taken to hospital.

A man in his 40s was transported to Westmead Hospital in a serious conditon with burns to his hands and face.

Another man, in his 60s, was taken to Auburn Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. 

Specialist rescue crews remain on site in a desperate effort to locate and free those still unaccounted for.
