As the world celebrates Mother’s Day, a powerful Ewe composition by Ghanaian musician and diplomat Togbe Afrika, known in private life as His Excellency Paskal A. B. Rois—is once again striking a chord with audiences across the country.
Titled “Danye Sidzi Ma,” the emotionally rich track is a heartfelt tribute to mothers, with a particular focus on the artist’s own mother, Miss Kassah Josephine, a former teacher at Mac-Tetteh International School in Dzodze.
The song highlights the immeasurable sacrifices and unwavering support of mothers in shaping the futures of their children.
Composed in 1999 ahead of Rois’s enrollment at Accra Polytechnic in 2000, the song draws deeply from personal experience.
Miss Josephine played a pivotal role in her son’s academic journey, providing encouragement and support throughout his secondary and tertiary education. Her devotion became the inspiration behind this enduring anthem.
After a series of demo recordings, “Danye Sidzi Ma” was professionally produced in 2003 by legendary Ghanaian producer Jay Q at Hush Hush Studios.
Despite the absence of digital platforms at the time, the song gained widespread popularity through radio play, quickly becoming a household favorite. Its soulful melody and poignant lyrics made it an instant classic.
The song’s appeal lies in more than just its sound—it is its emotional depth that continues to resonate with listeners.
With vivid storytelling and a sincere delivery, Togbe Afrika captures the essence of maternal love, resilience, care, and selflessness. The composition remains a rallying call for artists to create music that goes beyond entertainment to touch the soul.
While Paskal Rois has since transitioned into high-level professional roles—including his appointment as Honourary Consul of Indonesia to Ghana in 2021—the legacy of “Danye Sidzi Ma” remains intact.
In addition to his diplomatic work, Rois is a successful entrepreneur with interests spanning oil and gas, aviation, tourism, construction, media, minerals, and pharmaceuticals.
As Mother’s Day brings renewed attention to the contributions of mothers, “Danye Sidzi Ma” serves as a poignant reminder of their vital role in society.
It is both a celebration and a challengeto honour, appreciate, and uplift mothers not only through words, but through music that endures.
