The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has refuted the backlash against the Black Stars by some Ghanaians who believe that most of the players lack commitment to the national team.

The Black Stars’ shocking early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) still lingers, marking their second consecutive failure to progress beyond the group stage in the competition.

In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the bold decision to part ways with the entire technical team.

However, the restructuring has yielded no major improvement, as Ghana failed to win a single game in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, ultimately missing out on the tournament for the first time in two decades.

As a result, many fans have shifted the blame onto the players, arguing that their commitment to their clubs appears greater than their dedication to the national team, and suggesting that they are in the team just for the benefits.

However, Adams, who witnessed the team’s first training session on Monday, March 17, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, believes the players are committed and dedicated to representing the national team.

“I’ve seen that they have motivated themselves. It is not about money. If it were about money, many of them are already earning more than whatever it is that we’re going to give them,” he said.

He further disclosed that the ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association, has ensured that the players receive all the necessary resources to enhance their performance against opponents.

“What they want are good pitches to play on, and that’s what we’re working on. We’re making sure they have all the technical departments to support the analysis of the opponents,” he added.

The Black Stars will continue their quest to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in upcoming matches against Chad in Accra and Madagascar in Morocco on March 21 and 24, respectively.
