Stonebwoy coined the term AfroDancehall

Ghanaian AfroDancehall pioneer Stonebwoy has shared the inspiration behind his genre-blending sound, describing his music as part of a broader vision for a “borderless Africa.”

In a recent interview with BBC1 Xtra, Stonebwoy explained that his passion for music and unity guided his creation of AfroDancehall more than a decade ago.

“Right now, we’re trying to preach about borderless Africa. And when it comes to the governance aspect, the Caribbean is part of Africa,” he said.

Stonebwoy explained that the concept of borderless Africa extends beyond the continent to include regions where Black people have historic and cultural ties, including the Caribbean.

“Ever since I could sing a word or two, I’ve had a strong conviction that I needed to blend the sounds of Afrobeats and dancehall music. That’s how I came out with AfroDancehall some 12, 13 years ago,” he explained.
