Highlife musician and Presidential Staffer for the Blackstar Experience, Rex Omar, has urged Ghanaians to prioritise speaking their local languages at home to preserve their heritage.
In a post on his Facebook handle, Rex Omar emphasised that language preservation begins in the household, stating, “Speak your local language to your children at home instead of English! The surest way to preserve it. This advice goes for all my dear citizens of Ghana.”
This call to action comes as Ghana grapples with tensions over cultural representation and identity.
Akwaaba’, ‘Woezor’ signage replaced with ‘Oobake’ at Nkrumah Memorial Park
Recently, calls have been made for “Akwaaba” (Akan) and “Woezor” (Ewe) welcome signage to be replaced with the Ga word “Oobakɛ” at some monuments in Accra.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) swiftly denied involvement, with CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto clarifying that the agency had not approved any changes.
Despite this, physical checks by GhanaWeb confirmed the replacement, sparking mixed public reactions.
Amid this development, some have argued that the Ga language deserves recognition on Ga land, while others view the move as tribalistic and divisive.
