Award-winning Ghanaian filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso has criticized the Ghanaian media and movie-loving public for what she describes as their obsession with Tyler Perry’s latest film, Straw.
According to her, while it’s understandable that Tyler Perry is a global brand, the level of attention and discussion his film has received in Ghana too excessive, especially when local filmmakers like herself are consistently overlooked despite putting out equally good movies.

Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the Perfect Picture director could not hide her frustration. “Why are we talking about Tyler Perry’s movie when we could easily have that same attention come to a Shirley Frimpong-Manso movie?” she questioned.
She further pointed out that many Ghanaian filmmakers are producing powerful stories that tackle deep societal issues but do not receive even a fraction of the recognition that foreign films enjoy in Ghana.
Shirley further lamented that even though she has been in the Ghanaian movie industry for 17 years and contributed immensely to its growth, the support she receives at home is nothing compared to what some Hollywood content creators get.
It should be noted that Shirley recently took launched a new Sparrow Station on YouTube, where she shares both new and classic movies from her catalogue, including the popular series like Adams Apple.
