Sports journalist Saddick Adams has shared some remarkable observations from his recent visit to Singapore.

He revealed that one of the most striking things he noticed was the presence of elderly people working in restaurants, unlike in Ghana, where such roles are typically filled by younger individuals.

The 2021 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Journalist of the Year also noted that Singapore’s airport relies heavily on technology, rather than security personnel such as immigration officers, as is common in Ghana.

“The restaurants had men and women over 60 years old working as waiters and waitresses. It’s part of their culture, and people find it admirable. It also gives older individuals the opportunity to stay active and fit. The average life expectancy is around 84 to 85 years, and some live beyond 90. I also observed that their fertility rate is quite low, 0.97 compared to Ghana’s 4.

“I was told this is influenced by their career focus and upbringing. Their airport is one of the largest and most efficient in the world. Passports are checked by machines, unlike in Ghana where immigration officers handle that,” he said in Twi while speaking on Angel FM.

Saddick Adams further disclosed that most residents use trains for their daily transportation, which has significantly reduced traffic congestion on the streets.

“The streets leading to the airport are empty, so there’s no traffic. I asked where all the people were, and I was told they’re underground. The entire country has a mapped-out train system beneath it. People take trains to shopping malls, schools, zoos, gardens everywhere,” he added.
