Alibaba is a veteran Nigerian comedian

Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, has established that polygamy is not just tradition but can actually bring stability to relationships.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Nedu, Alibaba said polygamy, though mostly criticized, can sometimes help maintain balance in marriages and reduce conflict among partners.

According to him, the presence of multiple wives can encourage cooperation and mutual respect.

“Some people believe that when you have only one wife, you may not be able to control the wife. But when she knows there’s another woman in the picture, she will calm down because she knows that once she misbehaves, another one is available,” he said.

The comedian pointed to traditional practices in some parts of Nigeria, recalling that in old Ibadan, polygamy was not only accepted but sometimes supported by women who wanted to avoid problems of infidelity.

“I know of a woman in Ibadan who supported her husband to be a polygamist. Back then, some women marry young girls and gift to their husbands. Because they don’t want their men having concubines,” he explained.

Alibaba added that polygamy in some cases was not born out of desire but out of social responsibility.

He said when a man dies, families sometimes encourage their brothers to marry the widow to provide care and stability for her and the children.

“When a man dies, and his wife is still young or has little children, the family may call the brothers and say, which of you can take care of this girl. That’s also part of how polygamy evolved,” he said.

Acknowledging that polygamy remains a divisive issue, Alibaba argued that people often condemn it in public while practicing similar behaviours in private.

“People may argue that it’s not right, but many of those same people end up having children with multiple partners,” he added.
