From L to R: Ladies dressed in African print, wide legged pants, and boubou dresses From L to R: Ladies dressed in African print, wide legged pants, and boubou dresses

The pride of Ghanaians lies in their rich cultural heritage ranging from food, music, dance and culture.

In the various parts of the country, each region and culture is represented by a unique sense of dressing and style.

In times of old, Ghanaian men and women wore dresses made of various fabrics from the different types of woven fabrics, to manufactured ones.

Wide legged pants and wide-hand dresses were the order of the day for the elite in early Ghana.

But with the evolution of time, these styles faded out and were replaced with more modernised ways of styling.

However, some of these styles have somehow found their ways back into modern fashion trends.

In the spirit of Ghana month, let’s revisit some of these styles and how they have been reinvented in recent times.

    Versatility of Traditional African fabrics

Due to westernisation, most Ghanaians moved from wearing African prints to more official wears.

However, in recent times, many people have embraced these styles for every and any occasion.

Whether formal, informal or casual events, Ghanaians rock any attire in African print.

    Wide legged pants

Another fashion style that has fast become the new trend is the wearing of wide legged pants, instead of skinny ones.

One distinctive style of the people of old was baggy trousers but that faded out.

It has, however, gained popularity again as it has become a more preferable option to skinny jeans.

    Half shoes

These types of footwears used to be the cool kid of the 90s.

It went out of vogue but has gained some popularity in recent times.

While others believe it should stay in the past, some have embraced it in the present.

    Boubou dresses

A new trend of African print boubou dresses have emerged where young people are styling big dresses stylishly.

These types of dresses were common in the late 90s and 2000s but can be seen on the average Ghanaian girl today, rebranded as “giving rich auntie vibes.”
