Former sports minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has voiced his disappointment over the deteriorating condition of the Bukom Boxing Arena, a facility he regards as a key legacy project of the Mahama administration.

The arena, once a beacon of hope for Ghanaian boxing, was established during Vanderpuye’s tenure. However, it has experienced little to no maintenance in recent years, with parts of the facility already falling into disrepair.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Vanderpuye criticized the poor maintenance culture among Ghanaians and expressed concerns that similar neglect could be affecting other major sports facilities.

“I feel so sad when I go to the Bukom Boxing Arena because this was a facility that is a legacy of the John Mahama administration, when I was Minister. After 8 years, it’s almost deteriorated. The pool has been destroyed. I am sure it’s the same with Borteyman and the University of Ghana Stadium,” he lamented.

Despite his concerns, Vanderpuye expressed optimism about the leadership of the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, showing confidence in their ability to revitalize Ghana’s sports sector.

“I have 100% trust in the Minister of Sports and Recreation, and I have 120% trust in the new Director for the National Sports Authority. All of us are working together to make sure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated,” he added.
