Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has passed on.

She reportedly died on Thursday, October 23, at Ridge Hospital in Accra, according to family sources.

Despite multiple reports about her death, an official statement is yet to be released.

Nana Konadu was the wife of Ghana’s late former President, Jerry John Rawlings, who died on November 20, 2020.

Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast in the Central Region, Nana Konadu was a trailblazing stateswoman, gender equality advocate, and influential political leader who left a profound mark on Ghana’s national life.

She was admired for her courage and commitment to women’s empowerment and social progress. She founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) after parting ways with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party she once helped to build.

Her recent public appearances included attending a state ceremony at the Jubilee House, where she joined other dignitaries in laying wreaths to honour eight public servants who died in a tragic helicopter crash.

The former First Lady was also seen at the Dote Yie funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, where she was accompanied by two of her children, Amina and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings. Together, they offered condolences to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the solemn occasion.
