As Valentine’s Day approaches on February 14, excitement is mounting in Ghana.

It’s a day dedicated to celebrating love, friendships and gratitude; an occasion to express affection and appreciation to those who hold a special place in our hearts.

Consider sweet treats, blooming flowers, thoughtful gifts and cherished moments together; it’s all about what resonates most with you and your beloved.

On February 12, 2026, GhanaWeb TV’s Naomi Panyin Appiah-Danquah ventured into Accra, including the bustling Markola market, to gauge public opinions on the upcoming celebration, uncovering a variety of perspectives.

Anticipation is not limited to romantic dinners and gift exchanges; there’s also the expected economic boost in multiple sectors.

However, a crucial question looms: Is Valentine’s Day a sincere expression of love or has it morphed into a commercial event driven by societal expectations?

One woman voiced her skepticism, stating, “I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day.”

Conversely, a young man expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I go all out for Valentine’s, especially for my girlfriend. She’s been supportive and understanding, and I want to celebrate her wholeheartedly as the day approaches.”

Many Ghanaians view Valentine’s Day as a wonderful chance to demonstrate affection and honour their loved ones.

“It’s a lovely occasion to show how much you care,” noted one respondent.

People are on the hunt for the perfect gifts, and retailers are rolling out the red carpet with amazing sales.

    However, the deals are lit.

“It’s also a nice reason to treat your partner.”

Yet, others expressed concerns, pointing to the high costs of gifts and the sense of obligation that often accompanies the day.

“It’s become too expensive,” lamented one individual.

“You feel this pressure to spend a lot, even if your budget doesn’t allow it,” another shared with GhanaWeb TV.

These varied opinions shed light on the changing landscape of Valentine’s Day in Ghana.
