Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton is not backing down from his ridiculous takes on the Africa Cup of Nations and African football despite a myriad of criticisms being directed at him.
In his latest attack on African football, Barton claims that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was a far superior footballer than Ghana and Bayern Munich icon Sammy Kuffour.
According to him, Jamie Carragher had a better career than Sammy Kuffour and therefore was a better footballer overall than the Ghanaian, who is still celebrated in the streets of Munich.
“Carragher has had a much better career than Kuffour. Good effort, but JC’s better for me,” he tweeted in response to social media users who mentioned Sammy Kuffour’s name as a better footballer than Carragher.
Barton drew the ire of Africans on Thursday, March 6, 2025, when a video clip of him claiming that Jamie Carragher was better than any African footballer in history went viral.
He made the statement in defence of Jamie Carragher’s stance that the AFCON unlike the Copa America and Euros is not considered a major tournament.
“Africa have never produced a better defender than Jamie Carragher. Can anybody name a better African defender than Jamie Carragher? Kolo Toure was never better than Carragher.
“It’s a great continent that has produced phenomenal talent and deserves to be taken seriously as a major tournament, but you can’t name me one defender who was better than Carragher,” he said.
Sammy Kuffour, whose place in the list of greatest African footballers is without question, won seven league titles with Bayern Munich, one UEFA Champions League title, and four DFB Pokal titles, among others.
