Local football enthusiasts are divided over the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Ghana Premier League.

Reacting to the soon-to-be-introduced technology on GhanaWeb Sports Debate, a section noted that VAR is needed to improve refereeing in the local league and that it is a good step by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

On the other hand, others argue that the league has peculiar problems that need to be addressed before the introduction of VAR, highlighting poor pitches as an example.

The GFA has taken a significant step toward introducing VAR in the GPL following a meeting with officials from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

The two-day meeting focused on assessing the country’s readiness to adopt the technology, which includes FIFA’s Implementation Assessment Approval (IAA), necessary for any Member Association (MA).

The initiative to adopt VAR in Ghanaian football aims to ensure more accurate officiating and align with global standards.

Official approval from FIFA will pave the way for the GFA to introduce VAR in the Ghana Premier League, addressing complaints about poor officiating affecting clubs.

As Ghana gets closer to implementing the technology in the local league, GhanaWeb Sports Debate host Emmanuel Enin engaged some Ghanaians on the street to gather their opinions on whether or not VAR is the most crucial step needed to improve the local league.
