Ahmmed Kanneh Larweh, popularly known as Sparqlyn, who has been in the Ghanaian music scene for over two decades and chalked up many successes along the way, has declared himself Ghana’s pioneer in rapping in the Krobo language (Adangme).

This revelation comes in the wake of recent discussions about how the use of indigenous Ghanaian languages in songs by various musicians helps to promote cultural identity and heritage.

In a recent interview, the “Your Body” crooner disclosed that when he began his music career, he decided in principle to be unique by fusing traditional Krobo (Adangme) rhythms with contemporary hiplife sounds to set himself apart in the industry.

He added that this decision has been instrumental in his success as a performer, right from his days as a member of the hiplife group Dunsin, which gained prominence with hits like “Oya Die Yie.”

The renowned real estate developer further stated that after starting his solo career, following the hibernation of his former group, he continued to dedicate himself to promoting Krobo culture through his music.

By incorporating the Krobo language and traditional sounds into his songs, Sparqlyn believes he has played a pivotal role in bringing Krobo’s heritage to the forefront of Ghanaian music.

In recognition of his efforts to elevate Krobo culture through his music, the chiefs and elders of Krobo Odumase bestowed upon him the chieftaincy title Nene Kanneh Larweh I, with the designation Noryam Matse, meaning Development Chief.

This honor reflects the community’s appreciation for his contributions and their desire for him to continue promoting and preserving their cultural heritage.

Sparqlyn also noted that through his music, he has actively engaged in initiatives aimed at uniting the Ga-Adangme states.

He mentioned that his commitment to cultural unity is evident in his visits to and interactions with key traditional leaders.

He has so far met with the Paramount Chief of Gbese and Adonten of the Ga States, HRM Nii Dr. Ayi-Bonte II.

Additionally, he stood proudly by the side of the Paramount Chief of Manye Krobo and President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, HRM Nene Sakite II, during the 131st anniversary celebration of the Ngmayem Festival.

Finally, Sparqlyn also met with the Paramount Chief of the Asere Traditional Area, HRM Nii Nikoi Olai Amashie III, during the Homowo Festival.

According to the award-winning musician, on all these occasions, discussions were held about creating music to promote the Ga-Adangme states.
