A man has been seriously injured after welding equipment caused a gas bottle explosion in Western Sydney.

NSW Ambulance said the male, in his 50s, suffered injuries to his face and legs on Grevillea Road, Chester Hill just before 12.30pm on Monday.

‘He had facial injuries as well serious shrapnel wounds on his legs,’ the spokesman said.

Witnesses heard a loud explosion that echoed across multiple streets before contacting emergency services.

Four ambulance crews were on scene including an aeromedical team with critical care paramedics.

The man was transported to Royal North Shore Hospital and in a serious but stable condition.
