A 29-year-old Ghanaian student at Andhra University in India has died under unclear circumstances, raising concerns among university authorities and Ghanaian officials.

The deceased, Ivan Obeng Lartey, was a first-year Business Management student and one of 30 Ghanaian nationals studying at the institution. He lived in Room 401 of the YMCA hostel on Beach Road.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Lartey was taken to a private hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, 2025, by fellow students who said he had been suffering from a high fever and vomiting.

He was later moved to King George Hospital (KGH) at Andhra Pradesh, India, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

University authorities expressed concern that they were not promptly informed about Lartey’s condition.

NM Yugandhar, the university’s Chief Warden, stated that neither he nor hostel management were alerted in time to provide emergency assistance.

“If we had been informed earlier, we could have arranged immediate medical help,” Yugandhar told The Hindu.

The Ghanaian Embassy in New Delhi has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted once an embassy representative arrives.

The exact cause of Lartey’s sudden illness and death remains unknown, with the autopsy expected to provide further clarity.

Meanwhile, both the university and Ghana’s diplomatic mission await official details on the tragic incident.
