Abeiku Santana is the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority

Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority in charge of Operations, Abeiku Santana, has dismissed fears about competition from Nigeria.

He insisted Ghana remains the leading tourism destination in West Africa, especially during the festive December season.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on January 11, 2026, Abeiku Santana said competition is inevitable when a destination becomes successful.

He stressed that Ghana is not threatened by Nigeria’s growing December tourism activities.

“The Nigeria competition in December, I understand. When you become successful in any trade enterprise, you automatically attract competition. Once you attract competition, you then have to strengthen your position. We are not scared and we will never be,” he said.

According to him, Ghana’s strength lies in strong partnerships with the private sector and the consistent delivery of local artistes, which continue to drive the success of December in Ghana.

“The partnership and collaboration with the private sector, our artistes are delivering. Look at the distribution, our artistes are holding their own events,” he stated.

Abeiku Santana emphatically declared Ghana as the top tourism destination in the sub-region.

“We are the number one tourism destination in West Africa. Nigeria cannot beat us,” he noted.

He also highlighted how December in Ghana has evolved beyond Accra, reaching other cities and regions across the country.

“Yesterday on a panel discussion, we were asked how we would describe December in Ghana in one word and I said energetic, DJ Mensah said growth. I appreciated that and I borrowed that description from him,” he disclosed.

Abeiku Santana further explained that the spread of events nationwide is a clear sign of progress.

“Growth in a sense that you’ve heard that other cities and regions are receiving their share of December in Ghana events and activities so it is an indication of growth,” he added.
