The Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams, has clarified that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars without consulting the new government.

This clarification follows the GFA’s announcement on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, regarding a restructuring of the Black Stars‘ technical team.

As part of the changes, the GFA appointed German manager and former Africa Cup of Nations winner (with Cameroon in 2002), Winfried Anton Schäfer, as Technical Advisor while retaining Otto Addo as head coach.

Despite these changes, Adams revealed on Sporty FM that the GFA did not consult any representatives from the new administration before making its decision.

“At the time the GFA decided to keep Otto Addo, I had not yet been announced as the Sports Minister-designate. However, I have spoken to those who represented the new government during the transition, and none of them was involved in the decision,” he said.

As a result, Adams has indicated that his ministry will conduct a thorough review of the GFA’s recent decisions, particularly the appointment of Winfried Schäfer to the Black Stars’ technical team.

He also raised concerns about the financial implications of Schäfer’s appointment and suggested that his ministry would examine the contract to explore potential cost-saving measures.

“We will review the GFA’s new appointments to the Black Stars’ technical team. This will be one of my first engagements with the GFA. Can we find a more affordable alternative to Winfried Schäfer? Can we negotiate a lower salary, or does his contract allow for a review? We will assess all these factors,” he added.
