As part of the 50th celebrations of the EU Month, the European Union, led by its Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Rune Skinnebach, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports and cultural engagements in Ghana.

At the launch of the EU Month in Accra, Mr Rune Skinnebach highlighted sports as a unifying force in strengthening people-to-people connections between Ghana and Europe.

One of the flagship activities for this year’s celebration was a long-distance bike ride from Tamale to Accra, symbolising endurance, unity, and the strength of the Ghana–EU partnership.

The ambassador explained that such initiatives were designed not only to commemorate the 50th anniversary of EU presence in Ghana but also to actively engage citizens, particularly the youth in meaningful ways.

“Sports provide a powerful platform to connect communities and promote shared values,” he noted.

The 800- kilometre cycling event, which began from Tamale Jubilee Park and ended at the Netherlands Embassy, formed part of a broader effort to make the EU Month more interactive and accessible to the public.

According to the ambassador, the celebrations reflected a shift in strategy from formal, institutional engagement to a more people-centred approach that prioritises visibility and participation.

This comes against the backdrop of what he described as a long-standing “paradox,” where despite five decades of cooperation, many Ghanaians remain unclear about the EU’s identity and role.

Through sports and cultural events, the EU aims to bridge the gap by bringing its values and activities closer to the people of Ghana and beyond.

The ambassador further underscored the importance of youth involvement, noting that sports initiatives can serve as pathways for empowerment, discipline, and opportunity.

He indicated that the EU’s broader partnership with Ghana includes support for youth development programmes, many of which intersect with sports, education, and entrepreneurship.

The ambassador reiterated that the EU was repositioning itself as a reliable and predictable partner for Ghana, with a focus on long-term impact.

The EU Month celebrations will climax with a high-level reception in Accra, bringing together government officials, diplomats, and stakeholders.
