The official Instagram account of Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea has been deactivated following numerous complaints from aggrieved football fans after he officiated Nigeria’s game against Morocco on January 14, 2026.

Nigeria lost 4–2 on penalties after Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi’s spot-kicks were saved by Yassine Bounou, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After the game, some fans criticised the Ghanaian referee for what they described as biased and poor officiating.

The Super Eagles committed 29 fouls compared to Morocco’s 19, yet received two yellow cards while the hosts were not cautioned once, prompting accusations of one-sided officiating.

Nigerians poured out their outrage, as many lambasted the referee for what they believed was a poor performance that negatively affected the West African giants.

In the course of their furious reaction, some Nigerian fans flooded Laryea’s Instagram comment section with abusive language, while others resorted to reporting the account for misconduct.

To curtail the situation and avoid further escalation, the account ‘daniel.n.laryea’ was deactivated and can no longer be found when searched on Instagram.

This adds to the pressure that has been mounting on the referee since the end of the game, with his officiating becoming the spotlight rather than the performance of the teams.
