Black Stars head coach Otto Addo was in attendance as Borussia Dortmund secured a victory against Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Addo, who previously made a name for himself at Dortmund, served as the club’s official scout and also coached one of their junior sides.

The former Black Stars player received a warm welcome upon his arrival, surprising some members of Dortmund’s technical team. They exchanged handshakes and a few words.

Following his coaching exploits, the Ghana Football Association appointed Addo to oversee the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

He successfully guided Ghana past Nigeria in the playoffs and led the team to the tournament.

He became the second Ghanaian coach to lead the Black Stars to the World Cup, following Kwesi Appiah in 2014.

However, after Ghana’s exit from the tournament, Addo stepped down but was later reappointed following the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In the March international window, Addo guided the Black Stars to back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, positioning Ghana as group leaders with a strong chance of securing a spot in the tournament.
