Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah has shared the challenges she faced while pursuing her master’s degree in Communication Studies at the University of Ghana.

Speaking to the media on December 5, 2025, after renovating a computer laboratory at the University of Ghana’s School of Communication Studies, she noted that her lecturers were particularly tough on her.

According to the renowned actress, the pressure and strict supervision she received from her lecturers forced her to study even during uncomfortable hours.

Jackie explained that she did not want to be perceived as a failure, and for that reason, she had no choice but to put her acting career on hold to focus on her education.

“It was difficult for me because I was a celebrity, and the teachers were strict with me. Sometimes I might not be paying attention in class, and the lecturers would call on me to answer a question.

“They did not make it easy for me, so I had to be on top of my game. I didn’t want to fail because so many people looked up to me, so I had to learn. There were times I would come here in the middle of the night to study just because I wanted to pass. I didn’t want my students to see me as a failure,” she said.

Jackie Appiah also debunked the narrative that she earned her master’s degree on a silver platter because of her celebrity status.

“I am happy they didn’t make things easy for me. They made me go the hard way, like any other student. That is the perception out there, and that was why this particular department was very harsh on me. They didn’t want people to say that because I’m a celebrity, I had it easy, so they put pressure on me.

“I didn’t like it at first, but I later realised they were making me stronger and smarter. I am happy. It is not true that lecturers give preferential treatment to celebrities,” she added.
