Edem is a Ghanaian musician

IShowSpeed, one of the world’s most popular streamers, has been in the spotlight following reports that he is set to receive a Ghanaian passport after his highly anticipated visit to the country.

Ghana was the next to last stop on the American streamer’s 20-country tour of Africa, which ended on January 27, 2026.

After the visit, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that his office had approved a Ghanaian passport for the streamer, describing him as a “worthy ambassador” who positively projected the country to a global audience.

The announcement, however, has generated conversations among sections of the Ghanaian public, with some questioning why the American influencer should be granted a Ghanaian passport.

Rapper Edem weighing in on the discussion used a sarcastic comparison to challenge critics of the decision.

In a post shared on his X page on January 28, 2026, the musician referenced the United States immigration system, questioning why some Ghanaians objected to IShowSpeed’s passport if other countries recognise global achievements when considering residency or citizenship pathways.

“Winning a Grammy makes you eligible for Green Card category EB-A1. America, why are you giving green cards anyhow?” Edem wrote sarcastically.

Meanwhile, winning a Grammy does not automatically make someone eligible for a US green card. Rather, it can strengthen an application under certain immigration categories.

In plain terms, a Grammy does not guarantee a green card. It does, however, place an applicant in a strong position to qualify under the EB-1A (Extraordinary Ability) category, which is reserved for individuals with sustained national or international acclaim.

A Grammy is regarded as a major internationally recognised award and can satisfy a key requirement under this category, though applicants are still expected to provide additional evidence such as career impact, media recognition, and continued work in their field.

A Grammy can also support an application for the O-1 visa, a temporary US work visa for individuals with extraordinary ability in arts or entertainment. Many artistes use the O-1 as a pathway before later applying for permanent residency under EB-1A.
