The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on June 20, 2025, reported an incident to the Presiding Speaker of the House, Lawyer Andrews Asiamah, concerning events that transpired in the chamber.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the National Chairman of the ruling government the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, entered the parliamentary chamber to take photographs with 80 Members of Parliament from the NDC as part of his campaign to succeed President John Dramani Mahama.

While addressing the Speaker, Afenyo-Markin questioned whether such conduct was permitted within the rules of the House.

“Mr Speaker, you suspended the House for five minutes, and during that period, our colleagues allowed their National Chairman to enter the chamber to take pictures as part of his campaign, having garnered the support of the NDC MPs.

“The National Chairman of the NDC, who has declared his intention to succeed President Mahama, entered the chamber. Mr Speaker, 60 NDC MPs initially took pictures with him. I am told that number later rose to 80.

“Mr Speaker, I want the Chairman to know that the 80 is not enough, he should get more to make him the preferred candidate. But Mr Speaker, to conclude, I want to know whether the rules of this House allow such actions.”

In response, the Speaker sought the opinion of the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga regarding the incident.

The Majority Leader confirmed the occurrence and described Asiedu Nketiah as a familiar face in the chamber.

“Mr Speaker, I saw some NPP members struggling to take pictures with him. Mr Speaker, I saw it with my own eyes.”

“And Mr speaker before he entered the house the leader himself, rushed to received him, I was there. But Mr speaker …. he is allowed to enter the chamber, the chairman of the NPP is also allowed.”
