Executives of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) have gathered in Accra ahead of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, with officials calling for greater unity and increased opportunities for Africa to host major global sporting events.
The high-level meeting, held on Sunday at the African Regent Hotel, brought together CAA executives, World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe, and key Ghanaian sports administrators to discuss technical preparations for the championship, which will feature athletes from 54 African countries.
Addressing the gathering, Lord Coe congratulated African nations for the impressive performances of their athletes at recent international competitions and encouraged leaders on the continent to take bold decisions in bidding for major world events.
Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, stated that Africa is ready to host world-class athletics competitions if given the opportunity. He pointed to Botswana’s successful hosting of the 2026 World Relays as evidence of the continent’s growing capacity to stage international events.
“Africa is ready to host. Ghana will stand with any African country ready to host world championships,” he said.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts by African countries to improve sports infrastructure and athlete development, while revealing that Ghana is establishing a Sports Fund to support athletes, equipment, and facilities.
CAA Vice President Tuwei Jackson urged African nations to speak with one voice in advancing athletics development across the continent.
The championship runs from May 12 to May 17 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, marking the first time Ghana will host the prestigious continental event.
