It was a somber affair as thousands of fans and well-wishers stormed the Independence Square in Accra to participate in the candlelight vigil held in honour of the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

August 2, 2025 marks exactly a week since the country was left in a state of shock when the late Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, passed away after a brief illness on July 26.

The event, organised by the Creative Arts Agency was part of a world wide event to celebrate the life and impact of the music icon.

Various dignitaries from the world of creative arts in Ghana were in attendance including President of the Musicians Union of Ghana Bessa Simons, Head of the Creative Arts Agency Gideon Aryeequaye, rapper Sarkodie, gospel musician Kofi Sarpong among others.

The event kicked off with soul touching ministrations by the Harmonious Chorale followed by tear-jerking tributes from MUSIGA, the Creative Arts Agency and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

The candle-light session was disrupted by heavy winds, leaving the audience to resort to using flashlights.

Most touching of all were tributes read by the children of Daddy Lumba and one read on behalf of his widow.

The night climaxed with multiple hit songs of Daddy Lumba being played while the audience danced their hearts away.

Renowned musicians including Kwabena Kwabena and Pat Thomas graced the stage with their presence, making the vigil an unforgettable night.

In all, the vigil, which took place not only in Accra but in across Ghana and the world, was a gentle reminder of the impact of the Daddy Lumba and his contributions to music both in and out of Ghana.
