Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur, Rosemond Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo has reflected on her time behind bars.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM with Andy Dosty on July 16, 2025, Akuapem Poloo disclosed that the pain of being separated from her child was one of the hardest things a mother like her could endure.
“I was supposed to spend 90 days but I spent 17 days in jail. The trauma alone is something else. Even when they sentence you for a day, you wouldn’t find it pleasant in there. I was taken to Nsawam prison and the place was neat because I was at the women’s side and women are naturally neat” she said.
She continued, “It’s your freedom that has been taken away from you and you can’t have intimacy there. Being intimate is very necessary to me but my main focus was on my child that I couldn’t speak to and see him. I was worried about him every day.”
Akuapem Poloo further described how they were treated in the cells and how she coped with life there.
“We enter the cells at 5 pm daily and all the cells will be locked. We wake up at 5a.m as well, tidy up the place, some will go out to work and because I was new, they couldn’t take me out to work. The cell is like a boarding house where everyone will bath in a big bathroom,” she stated.
She added that “the female yard is always neat but I can’t say same for the men. They inspect our beds all the time and we were 24 in one cell. We sometimes eat twice daily. We are being counted before stepping out from the cell and when going to bed to check if we are all in.”
