Black Queens are grappling with a financial crisis that could affect their preparations and participation for the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.
According to Citi Sports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has informed the squad that it lacks the funds to support their pre-tournament activities. Efforts to secure backing from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have also failed, leaving the team in a difficult situation.
Black Queens made a return to the continental stage earlier this year under Swiss coach Nora Hauptle, who has since moved on to lead Zambia’s national team. Hopes were high following that qualification, but logistical setbacks now threaten the team’s momentum.
Traditionally, the GFA handles travel, accommodation, and per diems, while coaching salaries are covered through FIFA, CAF, or sponsorship funds.
This funding shortfall raises renewed concerns over how women’s football is treated in Ghana. With matches against Mali, South Africa, and Tanzania ahead, the Queens’ first test comes on July 7 against defending champions South Africa.
Neither the GFA nor the Ministry has issued a formal statement on the matter.
