A tragic accident on the Accra–Kumasi highway at Asuboi near Suhum in the Eastern Region has claimed four lives, leaving 17 others with varying degrees of injuries.

According to a statement released by the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Sunday, August 17, the incident occurred when a Kumasi-to-Accra-bound Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GW-5535-24 suffered a rear tyre burst while traveling at high speed.

The tyre burst caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road and crashed. The impact of the accident led to the death of three men and a woman on the spot, while the injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical treatment.

The GNFS added that emergency responders, including fire personnel and ambulance services, swiftly moved to the scene to assist in rescue operations.

Authorities have since cautioned drivers to exercise restraint, adhere to speed limits, and ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles, especially during long-distance journeys on highways known for frequent accidents.

The Asuboi stretch of the Accra–Kumasi highway has over the years recorded multiple fatal crashes, raising renewed concerns about road safety enforcement and driver discipline.
